I have been with Lorax EPI for two years as an Environmental Compliance Researcher, following previous roles in science and research. Over this time, I've enjoyed working with clients and supporting projects that help them navigate the rapidly expanding world of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). This area has grown significantly in recent years, with new legislation emerging across Europe and beyond.
One of the most rewarding projects I worked on this year involved guiding companies through the process of becoming compliant in the countries where they manufacture, distribute, and sell their products. It has been great to navigate legislative landscapes in all regions and translate this into simplified steps that allow clients to quickly and easily identify what they need to do. Alongside my manager, Emilia, we have looked to refine and improve the services we offer. Including answering some frequent questions from clients which include:
  • Where are we obligated, and in which countries?
  • What exactly do we need to do to comply?
  • How can we complete this process without complication and difficulty?
Unsure where to start to become compliant? Our new and improved services will help you easily navigate compliance and stay ready and prepared for incoming requirements in 2025 & 2026.

1. Compliance Screening: Clearer Insights with a new refreshed template

Compliance screenings provide a high-level review to determine whether businesses are likely to be obligated under various EPR regulations. The updates also reflect the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR 2025/40) and the new Battery Regulation (2023/1542), which may impact client obligations from 2026 onward and helping clients stay ahead of what's to come.

Emilia and I enjoyed helping to rebuild and refine sections that are easy to use and make navigating the different columns simpler. Transforming complex legislation across packaging, WEEE, and batteries into something clients can actually use was both challenging and rewarding. It's one of the parts of research that keeps me motivated, as the improved design gives clients a much clearer understanding of their potential obligations. The new format highlights:
  • Additional columns showing which obligations depend on factors such as producer type, packaging type, thresholds, and more.
  • Which areas of EPR are most likely to apply to your business.
  • Where potential risk obligations may require further assessment.
  • Where obligations are low or unlikely, helping reduce unnecessary concern.
The new template makes it easier for clients to quickly understand their exposure across packaging, WEEE, and batteries, ensuring that they can immediately prioritise areas. The screening template has been used in several projects, with great feedback from clients who appreciate being able to assess how they compare against key criteria. The ability to easily identify and navigate markets of concern from the screening has been a major advantage.

2. Compliance Assessments: Tailored, Concise, and Impactful

The Compliance Assessments have also undergone a major uplift this year. They provide detailed, tailored analysis to help confirm EPR obligations within each country where a client operates. Every assessment is customized to a client's business model and market presence and helps deliver actionable compliance insights for all target markets.

It was great to collaborate on exploring different formats, clarifying language, and ensuring the flow supported confident decision-making. We've enhanced the structure, layout, and level of detail to ensure clients benefit from a concise yet comprehensive report that includes:
  • A clear overview of all applicable legislation
  • A tailored summary of client-specific obligations
  • Visibility of upcoming regulatory changes that may affect your product portfolio or markets
  • Direct recommendations to support strategic decision-making
Understanding the steps to take is crucial for our clients, enabling them to make key decisions with clarity throughout the decision-making process.

3. Registrations: Supporting Businesses Across Global EPR Landscapes

With EPR continuing to roll out across more jurisdictions, Lorax EPI has been helping clients successfully register in an increasing number of countries, which is the next step after compliance assessment analysis. This has been especially crucial with the expansion of:-The EU Batteries Regulation (EU Batts Reg),-The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR),-New packaging, WEEE, and product-related schemes emerging worldwide.
As a researcher, not only has it been great to see these incoming requirements but also to understand how to adapt to the impact they will have on the registration process. Our team stays on top of all country requirements and helps support clients through each step such as preparing documentation, submitting registrations, and liaising with Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs). As more regulations become mandatory, having a trusted team prevents delays, avoids penalties, and keeps everything on track.
