Embedded Expertise: Guiding Clients Through WEEE and Batteries EPR
by Justin Given at 11:09 in Battery, WEEE, Emerging, Circular Economy

With a background in Environmental Technology, I joined Lorax EPI in October 2022 as a Policy Analyst, before transitioning into a consultant role at the end of 2023. From the start, I've been fascinated by the challenge of taking complex legislation, whether emerging U.S. packaging rules or established WEEE and Batteries EPR frameworks, and helping clients understand exactly what it means for their products and operations. What I find most rewarding is translating regulatory obligations into practical, actionable steps, so teams can move from uncertainty to confident decision-making.

This year, I've particularly enjoyed supporting multiple clients with their WEEE and Batteries EPR responsibilities, helping them strengthen internal compliance processes. Each client had slightly different needs, but all wanted structure, clarity, and a consistent way to manage obligations across different product lines and regions.

To support them effectively, I became part of their internal compliance conversation by joining their regular team meetings. This allowed me to understand their challenges directly and provide practical guidance in the moment, whether that meant clarifying scoping questions, identifying reporting requirements, or walking through how national rules differed between countries.

A key deliverable was a tailored legislative database covering all relevant WEEE and Batteries EPR obligations across their markets. This gave their teams a single, easy-to-use reference point and has become a core tool, helping them work more confidently and efficiently.

Across both clients, we also created and delivered a series of educational webinars for their local in-country entities. These sessions covered the fundamentals of WEEE and Batteries obligations, highlighted country-specific nuances, and provided practical examples tailored to their product portfolios. The webinars have helped ensure that teams at all levels, not just the central compliance groups, feel informed and able to carry out their responsibilities effectively.

In addition to the webinars and on-call support, we hold monthly update calls to review upcoming legislative changes, discuss potential impacts on their products, and help them stay ahead of future requirements. These discussions have enabled the clients to transition from reactive compliance to genuine proactive planning, which has been rewarding to see.

What made these projects stand out for me was the high level of collaboration. By embedding myself within their teams, building practical tools where relevant, and supporting education across their organisations, we were able to create strong, cohesive compliance approaches.

If you need support understanding your WEEE or Batteries EPR responsibilities, or would benefit from proactive, hands-on guidance, please feel free to get in touch.
