Refreshed How2Recycle labels

The How2Recycle (H2R) label, launched in 2012, is a voluntary labelling program designed to make recycling guidance simple and consistent across brands, helping consumers make informed choices. As recycling regulations and consumer expectations evolve, H2R recently introduced two new label types—How2Recycle Pro and How2Recycle Plus—to offer even clearer, more localized instructions.
Why the Change?
Fragmented recycling systems across the U.S. have left consumers confused about what's recyclable. With new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws pushing for clearer recycling guidance, the updated labels are intended to bridge this gap by making recycling easier and more accessible.
Overview of Pro and Plus Labels
How2Recycle Pro: This updated label is a streamlined version of the classic How2Recycle label, featuring more straightforward, actionable guidance that aligns better with evolving packaging regulations. It is designed to be more compliant with new recycling labelling requirements and is expected to clarify recycling processes for consumers.
How2Recycle Plus: This version includes a dynamic feature with The Recycling Partnership's "Recycle Check" QR code, enabling consumers to scan the code, input their zip code, and access real-time, location-specific recycling instructions. This is intended to reduce confusion by showing whether specific packaging is recyclable in their local area. The QR code functionality will roll out more widely in 2025, leveraging data from over 9,000 U.S. community recycling programs to provide precise recycling information.
The new "Pro" labels offer new iconography, whereas the "Plus" labels will offer QR codes for consumer to check whether the packaging is recyclable in their community. These changes aim to enhance consumer understanding of recyclability, reduce confusion and align with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policies.
