UK Plastics Pact and other reporting deadlines coming soon
by Rachel Langhill at 21:10 in Packaging

The UK Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), which leads the UK Plastics Pact, is collecting data by 26th June 2020 in order to track progress towards the Pact's established 2025 targets.

Target 1: Eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use packaging items.

Target 2: All plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable.

Target 3: 70% of plastics packaging effectively recycled or composted.

Target 4: 30% average recycled content across all packaging.

Members of the Pact, including retailers, brand manufacturers, food service, hospitality organisations, packaging convertors and waste management and recycling businesses, are required to share 2019 data on:

  • Plastic packaging – including all components made of more than 50% plastic.
  • Types of products – for all product categories, including cosmetics, clothing, electrical, etc.
  • Single-use plastic items – including some non-packaging items that have alternatives.

WRAP requires substantial data in order to accurately determine progress on the four Pact targets that were established in April 2018. Data will be used to create the second Member progress report – see the first progress report published in December 2019 here.

To measure progress, each target requires multiple tables to be filled out by retailers and brand owners with inventory, sales, collection and plastic import data. For each target, Pact members must also give data regarding highlights of achievements and priority actions for next year.

Reports are complex and lengthy, and require an understanding of several specific industry terms such as 'recycled content' and 'compostable packaging.'
